Allans House

Date 2005-2007 Area 215m2 Value $600,000

A major extension to a family home in Havelock North, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand.
With the existing house a rambling collection of buildings the extension anchors the house with a simple two story volume located as a hinge to the 3 existing parts of the house. This volume houses all the bedrooms and bathrooms allowing the older section to become a more expansive living area open to the magnificent views of the Heretaunga Plains.

The existing house is clad in plaster. The new extension is clad in a series of twisting timber slats that create a light, nuanced monoform providing a cohesion to the design. The twisting slats peal away for openings while acting as a brie soli and rain screen. Each join of the twisting slats is edged with recycled copper, heightening the play of light created by the twists on the facade.
